What is your relationship with money?

How is it affecting your life? Find out more.

For thousands of years, humans ate raw food. Raw meat, fruits or whatever they got their hands on until they discovered fire. Once they learned how to contain fire, they could cook food, boil water, scare animals and warm themselves. It completely changed the game for us.

This helped us grow the society, we started trading things with each other, we named it barter.

It was good, but it had many disadvantages.

  • No fair value. You can’t barter one pound of gold with one pound of corn.

  • You can’t sell or trade with everyone. Barter was only possible with people who had something for exchange.

  • You didn’t get everything you want.

So we invented money. Money is one of the greatest tools we have invented as humans. Now we can put a monetary value on anything. It helped us to freely trade with each other.

As we grew, money became bigger and bigger part of our life. But we are not properly educated about money, so a lot of us struggle with it. Our relationship to money can be a very vital factor to our happiness, peace and freedom.

What kind of relationship do you have to money?

Everyone has a different relationship with money. It is highly depended on our childhood and the people who taught us about money.

I was blessed that my dad was a businessman, which helped me to understand money in multiple levels. The economics of it and the struggles when the business was not doing well. It made me realize how important money was. So every time I spent money I was more aware of my spending habits.

Every dollar saved is a dollar earned.

We gather unhelpful baggage and misguided beliefs about money which we carry all our lives which sabotages us to get ahead and live with freedom.

The Psychology of Money

These beliefs shape our relationship with money which shape our future. There are 3 kinds of people:

  1. Money lovers: they want to make money at any cost.

  2. Money haters: they hate money because of their bad relationship but still need it.

  3. People who understand that money is just a tool.

A lot of these factors are based on our childhood. If our parents had a bad relationship with money, most times we carry that baggage. We are either money lovers or haters. If our parents, teachers or mentors explained money to us, we have a good relationship to it.

The good thing is that you can change this relationship anytime you want. It starts with the awareness of your own personal relationship with money.

Awareness of:

  • How you spend money?

  • Why you spend money?

  • Where you spend money.

When you are aware of this, you are already ahead in the game.

Money helps you get a house to live, bring food to the table, pay utilities and all the other expenses you want. The biggest of all, money helps us buy freedom. That’s what it’s most important for. Freedom from a job, freedom from things you don't want to do. Freedom from people who we don't to be around, freedom to follow our dreams and ambitions.

Saying all this, I have an action item for you.
